New Welsh Government policy paper reiterates call for UK to participate in European Territorial Co-operation programmes after Brexit
A key Welsh Government policy paper, published today, has reiterated a call on the UK Government to negotiate continued participation in the European Territorial Co-operation programmes, such as the Ireland-Wales programme, as part of a new relationship between the UK and the EU after Brexit.
Regional Investment in Wales after Brexit forms one of a series of Securing Wales’ Future papers setting out the Welsh Government’s vision for Wales outside of the EU.
The paper marks the first step in the process of designing a new approach to regional investment policy in Wales and sets out some constructive proposals that will form the basis of discussions and engagement with partners across Wales over the coming months.
In the paper, the Welsh Government reiterates its call on the UK Government to negotiate continued participation in the European Territorial Co-operation programmes, such as the Ireland-Wales programme, as well as Horizon 2020, ERASMUS+, Creative Europe and other EU programmes from which Wales currently benefits.
The Welsh Government highly values its relationship with Ireland and has made it clear it wants to see the Ireland Wales Programme continue for the long-term after the UK has left the EU. The Welsh Government has welcomed the recent joint report from the UK Government and European Commission on Phase 1 of the Article 50 negotiations, which suggests the door remains open to participating in future EU programmes such as the European Territorial Co-operation programmes and Horizon 2020, and we will need to continue to make the case for each.

Engagement events on the proposals set out in the Regional Investment in Wales after Brexit paper have been arranged for the New Year (18 January in North Wales and 25 January in South Wales).
A set of suggested questions for responses and a short online survey have been published to help frame those discussions.
